Information you provide

Information collected automatically

Our hosting providers may process basic technical information needed to run and secure the service, such as IP address, request time, device or browser type, and diagnostic logs. Our website also uses the Meta Pixel to measure page visits and successful account registrations, assess advertising results, and support ad targeting. Meta may receive browser and device information, IP addresses, visited page URLs, and cookie identifiers and associate website activity with a Meta account. We do not include account form fields or study content as event parameters. This website tracking does not add the Meta Pixel to our native mobile apps.

You can manage advertising preferences in Meta Ad Preferences and control cookies through your browser settings. See Meta's Privacy Policy for details about how Meta uses information.

How we use information

When information is visible to others

Your username and the profile or community content you choose to publish may be visible to other users. Notes, highlights, library items, and collections follow the private, shared, followers, or public setting you select. Direct messages are visible to conversation participants. Reports are not shown to the reported user.

Offline study and drafts

The app stores opened chapters, cached study content, unfinished thought drafts, recent searches, and appearance preferences on your device for the signed-in account. Notes and highlights saved while offline are queued on your device and sent to our service when you reconnect. Signing out clears the app's local study storage, including unsent drafts and queued changes; let pending saves sync before signing out if you want to keep them. Other people with access to your unlocked device or browser profile may be able to access locally saved content.

Push notifications

If you allow notifications, we store a push token associated with your signed-in account and device platform. We also store your daily reminder preference and time zone to schedule the daily prompt at 9 a.m. local time. Expo Push Service and Apple or Google process device identifiers to deliver alerts. Activity pushes contain a generic preview and an alert identifier. Daily prompt pushes include the public question; your response, private notes, and usernames are not included. Prompt responses are public thoughts, and you can delete them like other posts. You can disable daily reminders separately in the app without disabling other alerts. You can turn notifications off in your phone's Settings. The app removes its device registration when it next connects after permission is turned off or you sign out. Account deletion removes your device registrations, reminder preferences, and daily delivery records from our service. Alerts already submitted for delivery may still arrive, and offline sign-out cleanup is retried when the app reconnects.

Service providers and disclosure

We use service providers for application hosting, database storage, image storage, push notification delivery, and subscription management. RevenueCat processes pseudonymous customer identifiers and app-store purchase events so we can verify and restore Plus access across devices. These providers process information to provide those services. We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect people or the service, or as part of a business transfer with appropriate protections. We do not sell or rent personal information.

Content safety screening

We may send text and images submitted for profiles, community posts, replies, direct messages, and shared study features to third-party safety-screening providers, including Sightengine or OpenAI, for automated safety screening before they are made available to other users. Private study notes, highlights, library titles, and collections are not sent for this screening unless you enable sharing or publication, including an invitation link. Screening may prevent content from being shared. If you believe a decision was mistaken, contact Support for human review.

Retention and account deletion

We keep account information while your account is active and retain other data only as long as needed for the purposes described here. You can permanently delete your account from Settings in the mobile app. Account deletion removes your profile and associated study and community content, subject only to data we must retain for legal, security, or fraud-prevention reasons. If a suspended account is deleted, we retain keyed, pseudonymous fingerprints of its normalized email address and username so the enforced identity cannot be immediately recreated; these records do not contain the plaintext email, username, or deleted user ID. Limited backup copies may remain until routine backup rotation completes. Subscription purchase records may also remain with the applicable app store under its own legal and retention obligations. Deleting your Word & Witness account does not automatically cancel an app-store subscription.

Your choices

You can edit profile information, change sharing settings, remove content, block other users, or delete your account in the app. You may also use the account deletion page without the app, or contact Support to ask about access, correction, deletion, or another privacy request.

Children

Word & Witness is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact Support.

Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. No service can guarantee absolute security, so please use a unique password and tell us if you believe your account has been compromised.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. We will post the revised policy here with a new effective date and provide additional notice when appropriate.
